Backyard Sweet 16 in South Florida: The Planning Guide
Heat, rain, layout and the run of show: what to sort out before you host a sweet 16 at home in Miami-Dade, Broward or Palm Beach.
A sweet 16 at home used to mean a tent, a rented speaker and a lot of hoping. In South Florida it also means planning around heat and afternoon storms. Here's how to plan one that feels like a night out without leaving the backyard.
1. Lock the date first
Popular weekends book 6 to 8 weeks out; most other dates go 2 to 3 weeks ahead. If the birthday falls near prom, graduation or a holiday weekend, book as soon as you know the date.
2. Measure the yard
An inflatable nightclub needs a flat spot of grass or pavement with nothing overhead: no branches, no wires, no roof edge.
- Small: 14' x 17', 13' tall, up to 20 guests
- Large: 21' x 21', 14' tall, up to 50 guests
Mow the lawn short the day before. You also need four standard outlets on separate breakers, because the A/C and the blower can't share a circuit. No outlets close by? Add a generator.
3. Plan for heat and rain
South Florida evenings stay warm for most of the year, and the A/C is what keeps a full dance floor comfortable. Light rain doesn't stop the party: the Large is fully waterproof and the Small is water-resistant. For severe weather, we work with you to reschedule.
4. Tell the neighbors
A note a week before with the date and the end time goes a long way. Better still, invite them over for cake.
5. Build the run of show
- Arrival: the red carpet at the entrance for her walk-in and the first photos.
- Food and cake: outside the club. Light drinks can go inside; greasy food and red wine can't.
- The candle ceremony: inside the club, with the lights and the fog going.
- The dance floor: a DJ to read the room, or her playlist over Bluetooth.
The crew arrives about three hours before the start time to set up the club, the lighting, the A/C and the sound, and breaks it all down the same day.
6. Set the guest rules
- Shoes: sneakers, flat sandals or socks. Heels damage the floor liner.
- No confetti inside the club.
- The house rules are yours. We set no age limit, and what's served is up to the host.
